"It is my goal to glorify God and help others to draw closer to Him."

Musician Spotlight: Francisco Carbonell, Birmingham, AL

"As the late Pope Benedict XVI said: ‘singing is almost like flying, rising up to God; it is in some way an anticipation of eternity when we will be able to unceasingly sing God’s praise’. We sing when we do something important, something extraordinary. That's why we sing ‘Happy Birthday’ or our National Anthem, or at a graduation ceremony. In the same way, we sing during the liturgy because it is the most important thing we Christians can do!

I come from a very musical family. Growing up in Spain we used to have a family choir. We would sing at Masses and special celebrations, and my dad would arrange choral music for us. Later, while studying Sacred Music, I learned that the voice is the most important instrument for worshiping in the Church. I was blessed to be part of the Cappella Giulia (one of the choirs at St. Peter's Basilica) while studying in Rome, and that was definitely a turning point for me to become a composer of Sacred Music.

Sacred Music has become such an important part of my life that I can't imagine myself not doing something related to it! And when I write music, it is my goal to glorify God and help others to draw closer to Him. If you are considering involvement in music ministry at your parish, do not be afraid! Do not let fear or insecurity hold you back. If you have the desire to sing for the Lord and you want to learn, you will find the right people to help you!"
